Going above and beyond, to find innovative solutions for our customers, is always a priority at Norton Fluid Power. Here we show how we helped one of our valued customers get to the bottom of a recurring issue, saving them valuable time and money in repairs.

Problem

A food manufacturer was having major issues with powerpacks installed at site, mainly due to water ingress from the environment and very poor design. Due to this the powerpacks were failing on a regular basis causing the pumps and other components to fail, which was costing the customer over £7,000 for replacement pumps alone and costly production downtime. The customer was looking for a long-term solution with improvements to the maintenance regime of the current powerpacks.

Solution

Norton Fluid Power were contacted by the customer to come up with a solution to solve the issue quickly and efficiently. The powerpack was refurbished back to a quality standard, ensuring the oil inside the tank was sealed from water ingress and contamination. In addition, our engineers added quick release couplings so that filling and topping up the system can be carried out easily using a filter trolley. This also meant that oil sampling (also carried out by our engineers) is now considerably easier, as the oil can be filtered offline with no disruption to production.

Results

Not only do we have a happy customer, our quick resolution ensured that major downtime was avoided, but time and money has been saved with our effective upgrades which ensures ongoing maintenance can be conducted as simple as possible. The unit has now been running on site for 2 years with zero failures. A further 2 powerpacks have been modified since, ensuring the whole process is now covered against major breakdowns for the future. Regular servicing of these powerpacks is carried out by our hydraulic engineers and also oil analysis carried out by our fluid technicians on a quarterly basis and if any of the results come back as caution we can report this to the customer so that the reason can be looked into to try and prevent any catastrophic failures. The customer is very happy as the cost of parts caused by failures and downtime had paid for itself very quickly against the investment they had made in the refurbishment and modifications.
